Confidentiality & Privacy Policy
Federal and State laws protects the relationship between a client and a psychotherapist. Information shared between a client and counselor cannot be disclosed without written permission. However, laws also mandate that if a counselor learns of certain specific actions or situations, he or she is required to take actions and or notify authorities without your permission.
Those situations include:
- Suspected child abuse or dependant adult or elder abuse. I am required by law to report this to the appropriate authorities immediately.
- If a client is threatening serious bodily harm to another person/s, I must notify the police and inform the intended victim.
- If a client intends to harm himself or herself, I will make every effort to insure their safety by gaining their cooperation. If they do not cooperate, I will take further measures without their permission in order to ensure their safety.
These are the only situations in which I will break confidentiality.
